14-11-1978 / New York City, NY / CBGB's / USA When they returned to New York City for two extra shows at CBGB's The Police were interviewed by Jane Hamburger on WPIX-FM. Jane: "I remember the interview well and I have it on a big reel but the only date I wrote is 11/78. I met the Police and got their first single through Miles Copeland, whom I met when he brought UK Squeeze to America. After their gig at CBGB, he told me he had a new band he was bringing over and that was the Police. He gave me their import single on his label and I played it on the air. Management didn't like this and I got in trouble because it was not only not on the list, but they had no record contract and the single wasn't available, among other reasons. I was impressed by their talent and sense of humor and determination to make it. When they came over, they flew Freddie Laker's airline and brought their lunches. Then Miles got a van and they toured up the east coast and perhaps in Canada. I was the first person to interview them in NYC, but they'd been on the air in Boston at least". |
